What does a vibration dampener actually do?

It reduces the high-frequency string vibration you feel on contact - noticeably changing the sound of the ball hitting the strings (less ping, more thud). It does NOT significantly reduce shock travelling up the arm. If you have tennis elbow, string choice and tension matter much more than a dampener.

Where does the dampener go on the racquet?

Fit the dampener between the bottom two main strings, just outside the outermost cross string. It snaps into place without tools. Officially, ITF rules only permit dampeners to be placed outside the pattern of crossed strings - placing it elsewhere risks a warning in sanctioned play.

How often should I replace it?

A dampener lasts as long as it stays in place - replace when it falls out, splits, or starts losing its vibration-dampening feel. Many pros replace them each time they restring.
